July is upon us and the first half of the year is somehow in our past. I hope you are surviving through the heat, tumultuous storms, and early days of summertime.
This month’s wallpaper calendar captures dispersed golden fireworks raining down over the National Mall. Zoomed in on the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Building, from across the Potomac River, while standing in Arlington Ridge Park.
Growing up on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., my parents brought my siblings and me downtown for the fireworks almost every Fourth of July. Those days and fond memories feel like an entire lifetime ago. I suppose they are, in some ways.
In a bit of a role reversal, I brought Mom and Dad down for the fireworks my first summer back after living in Arizona. We enjoyed an evening picnic overlooking the Potomac, District, memorials, and monuments before the show began.
A decade has gone by and much has changed surrounding Independence Day activities. Maybe we will make our way back in the future. Taking in my childhood view from the Reflecting Pool, adult vantage point atop a city ridge, or, perhaps, somewhere new altogether.
